The subject says it all. I have been told different things about this. First the say the moter is pretty much toast, others say it can be welded. The moter runs great but I have to take the cover off to start it since there is no recoil on the hood. What I'd like to know is has anyone heard of welding the brackets back and would the hold. The moter is a merc. 40hp 1981. Thanks for all the help. :(

ibwhnt,

You have absolutely NOTHING to lose by trying to weld it. Just find a competent welder.

Very common problem with that block. Everyone we sold a 402 Mercury back then broke the block. Merc bought new blocks for them. That was in the early 80's.

hello
yes it is common to weld them up. I used to do a lot of them. after welding keep the motor in tip top tune so it will start at idle. using the warmup leaver increases the load of the starter. it will break again but it can be welded sevreal times.
good luck and keep posting
