starter brush?

my 1966 merc 350 came to me with a broken starter. when I took it off and pulled it apart a brush fell out, the positive one. Took starter to my marine motor guy who said he couldn't find me a set of new ones, also stated no way to put brush back on its wire. is it pointless for me to soder the old brush on.

Take the brushes to an electric motor or starter rebuild shop, Matt. They can supply replacements, though not "marine grade" at a higher price.
