Is there an easy tell tale whether the brushes need replacing?

why are you asking, are you having starter problems? post the engine model number, year, hp, and the problem your having. we can get it running again.

Oh yeah, the brushes were gone, only one was fully operational and it crumbled when I lifted it lucky for me Napa carries it. The problem was when I turned the key it hesitated but as I held the key turned, it would slowly pick up.

just had to spend $200 on a starter, for my '58 35 johnson. armature was bad.

TD, you know I get exited when you start talking about that old Johnson of yours. You better take good care of that thing or else I WILL file for full custody.
