3hp 1968, these instructions are from the service manual, I've always taken the recoil mechanism completely apart to put on a new starter rope and it is a huge pain - does this work?

To install a new starter rope only pull
rope until fully extended (or turn pulley
to completely wind the recoil spring;
then unwind one-half turn). Release
rope or unwind pulley until small holes
in pulley and housing are aligned and insert
a small pin or punch through the
two holes, to lock the pulley and prevent
recoil spring from unwinding. Remove
old rope and install a new rope of the
proper type.

Great, but how do you remove old rope and install new rope? How do you get at the little retainer inside the pulley to tie off the end of the rope?

Can you move this to the Evinrude section? Think I got it in wrong place.
