Having an issue with the starter disengaging the flywheel after about 1-2 seconds of cranking. NOTE: I have disconnected the ignition coil, meaning the engine is NOT trying to turn over, this is strictly the starter attempting to rotate the engine.
Backstory behind this is I had initially ground the teeth off my flywheel due to an ignition timing issue (engine firing opposite direction of rotation during starting). I just recently (2 days ago) replaced my ring-gear on my flywheel and finally buttoned everything up and am attempting to start my boat for the first time since then.
Below are the specs on the parts involved:
Any idea?

I just recently (2 days ago) replaced my ring-gear on my flywheel and finally buttoned everything up and am attempting to start my boat for the first time since then.
Below are the specs on the parts involved:
- 305ci GM engine
- New ring gear on flywheel as of 2 days ago, this is my first time attempting to start with the ring gear
- Starter is 4 years old
- New optima blue-top as of today
- Attempted no starter shims, 1 thin shim, 1 max-thickness shim (skipped the middle-thickness shim)
- The starter, although very new in terms of "starts" (prob less than 50 in the past 4 years), might be toasted due to the fact that I previously ground the starter against the flywheel causing me to have to replace the ring gear on the flywheel.
- Taking the starter to my local auto-parts store, they say it is "fine" by sticking it on their tester however.
- I may need some shim amount different than I currently have tried (never needed this previously though)
- I somehow installed the flywheel or ring-gear wrong. (doubtful as I had a professional install the ring gear and the flywheel is pretty much a no-brainer)
Any idea?
