Starter engaging even after boat is running

my starter engages when i have the key to the On (Not Crank) position and also when the boat is at idle the starter will engage and run until i turn the boat off...... my question is what do i check the engine or the ignition switch?

Yes.

Could be a solenoid issue, but they usually won't activate the starter if they fail.

So I would go with the ignition switch first.

+1 on looking at the starter switch to see if the wiring is correct. A bit more history on the boat/engine would be helpful. Is this boat new to you and the problem was there when you got it, or did the problem occur suddenly?

Ive had the boat for about 2 years. It happened all the sudden. Is there a way to test the ignition switch?
