Starter for a 1959 Johnson seahorse 35hp

What is the proper replacement starter? I have seen the part number listed as a 0381865, but have seen a placement starter listed as a 381864?

You need to expand your search.-----The 1967 model 33 HP uses the same starter bracket .----And I dare say the starter will work too.-----

Actually, a whole mess of motors 28-33-40 hp with similar mounting system will work Try looking for one of the newer, taller models. They are more powerful. But you should use the appropriate bottom support bracket with the taller ones

I forgot to add that many models also use that starter, not just the 1967 model 33 HP.

Thanks for the information in previous threads I saw a Arco #5377 and a Prestolite 5712N listed as replacement starters, but since the replacement part was not listed for these I was leery. this is a winter project and while I can replace parts I do not have a wealth of knowledge on these motors.

Before you start spending money on parts it is wise to do a complete evaluation of this motor.-----Compression test / removal of bypass covers to look at pistons and rings / teardown of lower unit to inspect impeller / gears and bearings etc.----Be a shame to have a new starter on a worn out 60 year old motor !!

I took it to a shop, and they looked at it and did the general test (and I know the mechanic) he said there was good compression and it was a good motor, but his shop would not work on it because of the age. He gave me a recommendation of another mechanic where I took it and said it was the starter, but it was the start of covid and replacement parts were not coming across from Canada, and I also suspect he didn’t want to put a lot more time into it. It is part of a 1959 Razorback that I am trying to keep together if I can.

I waded through the books, and come up with OMC 380239 and 386591 and ARCO 5376 and Sierra 18-5629 as fitting your motor. Also MAYBE ARCO 5712N. It all gets confusing because they replace so many models.

Hello all and again thank you for the information. I have received my new starter and I ordered a starter solenoid as well- when I was changing the solenoid out I noticed my positive cable that goes from the solenoid to the starter through the wire harness was not just exposed but crumbling and frayed, it is probably half the size it was due to the crumbled wire. My question - Is there any reason I cannot cap that positive wire off at both ends and send a new cable from the solenoid directly to the starter? I would tape it up to the outside of the harness and create a sealed hole for it to pass through next to the harness.

There is a place that sells a replacement / new internal wiring harness.------Easy solution in my opinion.-----nymarine------Not cheap but an exact new replacement.
