starter/go in/then spins

1978 baylinder<br />motor 470/170hp mercruiser<br />when i go to start it. the starter go's in to the flywheel but some times it spines.then i have to let of the key,then try it all over again,some times,3or4 times before it will catch and turn the motor ,then she will start.would it be the solenoid,or the bushing in the starter.<br /><br />what is a price for a new starter<br />can it be rebuild,and how much

If the bendix is indeed engaging the flywheel but not spinning the engine, the bendix is bad. Since the starter needs to be removed for the repair, take it to any reputable auto-electric shop. Have them replace the brushes and the end plate at the same time. You will essentially have a rebuilt starter and the cost will be quite reasonable.

Take it off and take it to NAPA or somewhere and have it tested. If it is bad Watertown has people that rebuild them so I know your area will
