starter grind on a 1982 merc 50hp 2 stroke

I have a merc 50 hp 2 stroke motor that the starter gear rides up and hits the bottom of the flywheel when running at a slow speed when I excellerate the grind stops. There is a little play in the starter shaft. Do I need a new starter or can you put a stiffer spring in?
