Hi,

I am having a problem with the starter in our boat. Occasionally (getting more frequent) the starter will "grind" and not engage. When we move the control handle from neutral to forward once or twice the problem goes away and the engine starts normally.

Is a starter replacement required or is there simply a component that can be replaced?

Can you identify exactly what's going on, so when I speak to a mechanic/parts supplier I've got something that resembles a clue?

1988 OMC 3.0 Liter
130 HP
Excellent condition
Low hours

Thanks for your time and effort.

Jeff

Re: Starter "Grinding"

Sounds spooky. Moving the lever has no effect on the starter... they're no way connected.

It is supposed to work this way: When you turn the key, a solenoid/relay working on a low amount of power makes a connection, leading the high power to the starter motor. Once the starter motor spins, the bendix drive is shot out and engages the gear on the flywheel, the starter cranks the engine.
The battery power must be OK (very OK, in fact).

Therefore your problem could be either
-sufficient power not reaching the starter motor or
-the starter (incl. bendix drive) motor not working properly.

Suggestion:
-look all connections over - incl. engine ground
-make sure your battery is absolutely OK, also under load.
If no improvement, remove the starter and clean/oil the bendix (WD40). If still no improvement take the starter to a car electrician and describe the problem and history so forth. Remember to tell it is for marine use.
He'll check/renovate and test the starter and solenoid.

Result: 100% power reaching a 100% working starter=cranking engine

Thanks UU, the battery is in good condition and trickle charged on a regular basis in between outings. I will follow-up on your other advice.

Jeff

It sounds to me like what you have to do with cars if the starter won't engage. Shifting the gears may slightly re-align the teeth on the flywheel so the pinion will line up better.

Just a thought.
