Engine type probably doesn?t matter but there it is anyway.

So about three months ago the after the boat sat for a bit the engine would barely crank over figured it was the new to me but unknown history battery so I bought a new one of course.
About a week later, after I had installed the new stereo. Thought I had screwed that up and had a slow drain somewhere. Put on the charger overnight and all good for a couple trips. Chalked it up the gremlins. I?ve been checking every now and then for the last month and has kicked over and the trim is fine. Until yesterday?.
Getting ready to head to Guntersville for the weekend and checking things over will barely crank. Checked batter, seemed goo but charged overnight anyway. Still a no go. Re-cleaned to shiny all connections, and yes all. Nope still not kicking over well enough to start.
Sh.t gotta leave tomorrow at 4pm so start shopping for a starter. Can?t get one overnighted (iboats wouldn?t guarantee even at $50 for overnight) but think I found one up the road supposed to be in tomorrow from Birmingham (thanks southkogs your guy you told me about).

So as I?m pulling off the old I get the top bolt out and remember back when I had the Force 120 I had some issues but I could knock the starter. Hell it worked! So, think I?ll just bring the new as a spare rather than doing the work now. After I tightened the bolt back and put up the tools I hit the key again. WTH? Back to issues. Unbolted and just for grins tapped a few times. Hit the key, kicked fine.
I won?t bore you anymore but essentially, almost every time I loosened the top bolt it kicked ok for about 10 times. Then quit. Then ok. Then not. Two bolts out, kicked, then not. Red wire loosened, kicked. Tightened, kicked then not.
Anyway she?s all out and ready for the new one hope it gets here as he semi promised. BTW who thought it was a good idea to have to remove the fuel pump and the plastic ousing in front of the carbs (about 20) just to change the starter.

So the question is ? am I missing something else that could be causing this and just spent $200 on a starter I didn?t need?

Evening Joe,

External connections might be bright and shiny but sounds like the brushes in your starter have served their purpose. I just recently discovered corroded brushes within my starter off the positive lead. your old starter is off right now correct? try removing the cap and inspecting the condition of the brushes. I only say this as I had same problem, a good whack made it work. Once rebuilt It was golden. Be prepared to craft a special little tool to get the starter back together, plenty of handmade pics on iBoats of the tool.

Goodluck, and that sucks about the starter being buried.
