I have a 60 hp Evinrude and today when pushing the starter there was no response. No noise of any kind. I took off the handle and found the 2 wires that go to the solenoid and did a jump between the posts (I thought it would be the same as pushing the start button). There was a small spark but nothing more. Do I have a bad solenoid? It has been perfect up to this point. I had plenty of battery to get me home with the electric and also use the tilt and trim. Any ideas?

So you're saying you put 12v directly on starter and nothing happened? first thing to check is all electrical connections. if all are good and starter will not turn with direct voltage you likely need the starter rebuild kit, which has new brushes and springs. pretty easy to do

No I did not put 12v directly on starter. I have cleaned all the connections from the battery to the solenoid and to the starter. I have been hesitant to put 12v directly to the starter, but OK to do? Everything is just quiet with no clicking etc. as I try the starter button or by pass and jump the wires at the solenoid - only a little spark at the solenoid when I do that.

I have a '82 evinrude 70 horse and had this same problem...could be the starter... but make sure you check the fuse that is located in line near the power distributor on the engine...should be a little 15 or 20 amp fuse in line....
Same M.O. as you... my engine would not turn over and would do anything even with jumper cables to the starter...replaced the fuse and BAM! she cranked right away...

I will look for this. I did find one in line fuse on the top of the engine and it was ok. Thanks

Well I did try the 12v direct and it did respond. So apparently not the starter. There is a bundle of wires on the top back of the head and one coming from the solenoid to the connectors on the other side of the engine was broken and or melted. I did try and jump around it and it makes no difference. I will replace this wire but still have nothing happening. Thanks for the input. Is the more than one fuse in line?
