First, I have searched all forums starter related and I have done everything suggested in them related to my issue. I don't want to make unnecessary purchases so please bear with me
1978 evinrude 235. I recently purchased this from a widow who knew nothing about it other then her
husband kept it at the lake, he used it 4 days prior to passing(which was 6 weeks ago). She recalls him walking to the dock, playing in the boat a few minutes, cranking it and heading off. She said it usually
took a couple tries for the motor to start.
Before my first attempt to start I pulled the cowl so I could watch. Everything appeared to do as expected other then the motor running. I read a lot about this motor so I thought, " not enough fuel", gave the bulb a squeeze, stil no luck. Pulled the plugs, wet! Dried and tried again. Almost started but battery died. Recharged batt but the starter began acting up(bendix would not disengage from the flywheel). Pulled the starter, took apart to clean the brushes, etc. Found small corner of magnet broke where the bolts run down the body. Cleaned all the remnats of that and put back together greasing the bendix track. Starter turns easy anddoesnt sound crunchy inside. Now when I attempt to start the bendix engages the flywheel and won't retract and it makes an awful noise. The bendix teeth don't look so hot and it looks like the area below the teeth has been chewed up somehow.
Should I replace the whole starter or will the bendix be sufficient? Why would the area below the bendix look chewed up? It wasn't like that when I initially purchased
