Starter Issue

I am helping my father in law with his 1986 Johnson 25HP motor. We have been troubleshooting why the engine would die shortly after putting it at full throttle. We decided to do the Carb rebuild, but while troubleshooting I noticed that the Starter drive pinion would come up when at full throttle and try to engage with the fly will. This didn't happen and we noticed that the top quarter of the pinion nut was warn away. We ordered a replacement pinion nut, spacer and spring. The starter is model 0586278 and has the black sleeve, and under that it does not have the nut. The starter appears to be working fine and the motor starts with no issues. I am just wondering why the starter is trying to re-engage when the engine is at full throttle? Has anyone seen this before? Will replacing the pinion nut, spring and spacer fix this issue or will we continue to have the same problem and need to replace other parts or the entire starter itself.

Thanks for any advice you can provide.

Not sure if I'm understanding...Are you saying this is engaging at speed, which is causing the motor to die out?

Does it appear to be vibrating up, as in loosely....Or driving up under pressure?

Others will chime in, I havent heard of this personally. Wonder of the starter is getting juice, making the gear spin up? Hmm.

I don’t think it caused the engine to die out. We believe that problem has been resolved when we did the carb cleaning and rebuild. It was during that troubleshooting that we noticed the starter pinion coming up and hitting the flywheel when the throttle was at full. It slowly comes up when it happens so it could be vibration, but we are not noticing any extra out of the norm vibrations. We got a new pinion and spring that corresponded with the model number that was on the side of the starter. The problem now is that the pinion nut that we just got is one piece and the one that was on the starter is two pieces. We think that the starter maybe a rebuild and that the armature maybe from a different model which uses a two piece pinion nut. Not sure if we can just replace that bolt so we can use the new pinion nut or if we should just get a brand new starter.
