Starter Issues

So, got started workin' on the boat again. Last winter, I had an issue with my starter, the thread on the top of the starter stripped out and lost the spring & nut (above the bendex). Anyways, fixed it (rethreaded), but began having troubles with the starter starting. Took it apart and discovered the plastic piece holding the brushes was broken and one of the brushes kinda sat in the middle. I rebuilt it to the best of my ability and let the winter run its course.

When I tried to start it this yesterday, I discovered that it wouldn't start (starter). So, armed with my trusty DVM, I when from point to point (batter/ignition/solenoid/starter) to find that everything was getting voltage. Long story short, when I bridge the gap on the start solenoid, the wrench would spark, but no movement on the starter.

My guess is that the starter is bad, I just want to see if someone else can offer an opinion.

Re: Starter Issues

Given that you have said that you had problems with the brush assembly, it is reasonable to assume that the problem is there. If you have a 4 brush starter motor and only two brushes are getting voltage, then yes you will get a spark and no, the motor MAY not turn. This also assumes you have no binding--either in the bearings or of the armature against the frame and magnets.

Your starter is either Bosch or prestolite. Each is a common part. Try taking it to a starter rebuilder. Or, buy a new one on ebay for--I think--around 200-250. Third choice? Buy a used one.

Re: Starter Issues

Thanks Frank, I just purchased a new one right here on Iboats, best price I've seen for a new one. I looked for the plastic bracket that holds the brushes, but couldn't find one. I figured that the starter was about toast, so it was about time to purchase a new one anyways. Thanks again.
