Starter Motor Clicks on Merc 65Hp

Hello guys,<br /><br />The starter motor on my "historical" (about 1978) Merc 65Hp sometimes clicks constantly when turning over. If I take the cowling off and manually move the shaft in and out, then try again, it works ok and turns the motor over.<br /><br />What could this be, and is it possible to repair myself?<br /><br />Thanks.

lube the shaft and make sure your battery is fully<br />charged, both will cause symptom.<br />regards,<br />M.Y.

Hey thanks MY. Brand new battery so looks like I need to lube. Any particular type?
