I have a glastron sx 175 with a volvo penta 4.3 gl year 2004 with an sx out drive.
I have put a new starter in every year i have owened the boat.

a lot of the time the casing on the starter breaks at the top where the bendex is, where the cog teeth stop when engaged.
i dont know why this happens. I put a new starter in last weekend and when I took if it off there was a crack in the casing at the tip..

also it does not sound the best when i turn the key some times it makes a clanking noise like its not engaging fully. turns over perfect when the plugs are out..

my next question is do many people have to shim there after market starter so they engage perfect.. sorry for such a long post.. my head is melted now and sick of buying starters.

Thanks for reading

Re: Starter motor problem

Thank you for the reply. There is no water in my engine as i have not connected it on. I turned it over wit out the plugs and nothing come out. The stater is tight with no movment. The starter bolts are fresh enough I will order some today of the net if you think that may help. Do the repo starters usually need to be shimmed
Thanks Colm
