Starter motor shorted?

Evening all,

I have a 2005 Mercruiser 3.0L, with what I believe to be a PG260F1 starter motor.

I'm working on the starter motor at the moment as the solenoid on the motor was not engaging. I got that working, but now that I have put the starter back together I cannot get the starter motor to spin. (I'm using service manual 26)

If I touch the starter motor case with the negative battery, and then the small wire coming off the starter with positive I get sparks but no movement. The starter can be moved by hand, so I don't think I have over tightened it.

Could I have shorted the armature somehow? Any ideas?

I take it the starter is on your bench and not installed.

Touching the positive cable to the small terminal just energizes the solenoid, you need a connection to the armature which is made when the solenoid energizes. Connect the positive to the large post on the solenoid, put the negative to the case. Take a screw drive and jump across the small and large (large terminal where + cable is attached) terminal on the solenoid.

Sorry I should have made that clear, I removed the solenoid for testing the starter motor itself and yes it's on a bench, much easier to work on.

I'm connecting the positive to the wire running from the brush holder.

Sounds like something opened up. Suggest taking it to a repair shop and have them take a look, would be cheaper "usually" then buying another
