I had 1962 35 hp chrysler motor, and got a 55 hp evinrude, which I put on boat. when I attached all the controls and hooked up the wires to the starter solenoid, and when I turned the key on nothing happened... I ended up putting the postive wire from battery to the same bolt coming out of the solenoid that I attached the wire running to the starter on the motor... I then turned the key and it turned over and ran... my question is,, do I have a bad solenoid, how can I test it for sure, and am I hurting or going to ruin the starter if I leae it connected this way and just disconnect the positve cable to battery after each outing?

Re: starter motor solenoid

sounds like you 2 solinoids in your system, if you put the hot (+) (positive) cable with the one running to the starter it would turn over at that point!
