Starter motor

I am converting a Yamaha 40 br 2 stroke to electric start.Having purchased a second hand starter , I feel this may be faulty.Starter is connected via jump leads straight to car battery (even running).Gear engages flywheel but turns motor over at a snails pace.remove 1 spark plug engine rapidly turns even firing.I have completely cleaned carbon from inside starter .brushes & springs good.no shorts between armature and spindle or casing and bushes.no solonoid used .Any suggestion gratefully received.

Welcome to iboats and how good are your cables?<br /><br />If you have one of those cheapie jumper cable sets ... well I've seen stronger speaker wire than on some of the cheapest. Otherwise I'd have to ask how the armature smelled? If it had a strong stinging smokey smell, it's fried. One more thing might be the gear. Does it mesh well and somewhat loosely? It might have a bendix appropriate for a different motor if it meshes too snug or if you see a lot of metal coming off the ring gear (It would also be rather loud and grinding).

Thanks,you were spot on.Cheapy jumper leads,not worth a ***. Used some heavy duty cable .Whamo.Engine spun to life.That is after cleaning the gunge out of the carb, been standing in a garage for 6 years.Sorry about the delay in coming back to you (women trouble).Boats and women do not mix,so I am sticking with the boat ....CHEERS.
