starter no response mercruiser 165 worked yesterday

I have a 1973 cobalt and i changed battery and no signs of working the starter it worked yesterday and now no chance what could it be?

I would start with jumping the slave solenoid & see if it will crank......​

no I HAVE A MANUAL thank you but I dont know very much about boats I was in a bind half way to the lake at the gas station and used there computer!!!!! THEREFORE REQUIRING INSTANT ANSWERS AND THANK YOU VERY MUCH DON IT WORKED FALSE NEUTRAL

I am not here to justify where I was...all i was asking for was help I was putting in gas while LIGHT BULB!! I changed battery and didnt even turn it over to check but fortunately I figured it out....THANK YOU GUYS!!
