I wonder if anyone can tell me why the starter pawl on Evinrude 25R77S keeps getting chewed up. I have had to replace it twice in the last year. Also wondering why they don't make it in metal vs plastic that seems to get damaged easily

They used plastic for over about 30 years.----Did someone grease the friction parts that engage the pawl ?-----Pulling gently to engage the pawl first?----Are you using the blue ones?

I did not grease the parts, and I guess you are talking about the pin it sits on and the large wire spring? What grease do you recommend? I am using the black ones and probably do need to be sure to pull gently to engage the pawl first. Thanks

Thanks, I can see how grease would gum things up and not move freely. I'll try the strategy of more carefully engaging the pawl

Look closely , there has to be friction / drag on the spring to fully engage the pawl.
