I have searched the forums, and have gotten a little confused. My problem is that the starter motor gear jams on the firewheel and gives the symptoms of a low battery. It has done this on six occasions and the only way it will start is if you hold the key on and smoke comes out of the starter. Have spoken to the mechanic I use, and he told me not to spray WD 40 into or on the starter as it binds the rubber things under the gear and that causes it to stick up. Stopped that practice October last year and have not had a problem untill today. The motor has 90hrs on it.

waykel,

I have never had a problem lubricating the starter Bendix drive with WD-40.

I would continue the process and walk the starter pinion gear up and down the shaft while lubricating it.

Also,

Check the negative battery terminal where it attaches to the engine block. This connection needs to be CLEAN and tight.
