Hi,

[5.7l Alpha Mercruiser]
[21ft. Wellcraft Excel]

I tried to start my boat and had no juice at all so I checked the battery and it had at least 9 volts (the max. on my multimeter). I took the (+) battery cable and connected it directly to the alternator instead of the starter and all of the accessories worked (horn, stereo) but when I tried to crank the engine I only got a single click.
I took the battery to an auto parts store and it tested BAD so I brought a new one home and tried the same thing but got the same results. I changed out all of the cables in case of corrosion and still had the same problem so I hit the starter a few times with a little hammer to see if I could knock the insides loose but it didnt help anything.
At this point everything seems to be pointing to the starter, am I on the right track?

What seems strange to me is that I can connect the (+) battery terminal to the alternator (to the same bolt as where the orange cable runs from the starter to the alternator) and get power enough to get a click but when I connect the (+) terminal to the starter I get nothing at all. How is that possible?

Thanks for your help, Im stuck.

lach
