gone thru three starters so far. seems my glastron will start once with rebuilt starter. after that, the gear will engage but not spin. reading 12.43volts at starter and 11.68 when engaged. when motor starts for first time, it sounds great at 800rpm. motor not siezed voltage good, but starter keeps breaking down. also, can i use a chevy 4.3 starter instead of a marine starter?

you could use an automobile starter but you run a very high risk of blowing yourself to kingdom come...I believe you may need to shim the next starter you put on the engine.. Im not sure, but some starters need to be shimmed a certain distance from the flywheel...........

Re: starter problem with 4.3

Thanks for all the info. At least I now know that I dare not use an auto starter just because the engine is so. Now I just have to locate a boat doctor who sells starters......shouldn/t be too hard. Since both starters I used (from Pep Boys) failed after one start, I hope they were just "bad to start with". In any case I will use a boat starter and thanks again for all the info.
