Hey guys,
Just recently when going to start my 50 horse two stroke, the starter will engage the flywheel but does not have enough "juice" to turn the flywheel. One would think this would just be a low battery issue but after that initial try, it turns over fine for as long as you want to hold the key over. It seems like the starter is starting to wear out and it just doesn't have enough power to turn the flywheel. Has anyone else had this happen to them? The weird thing is that once I stop the second time and go to turn it over again it does it again. If this makes no sense to you what so ever, I'll draw the pattern below

will raise to flywheel but not turn
turns over fine
will raise to flywheel but ot turn
turnes over fine
will raise to flywheel but not turn........
after doing this a few times it will slowly start to wear to where it doesn't turn it at all.

Please help! thanks!

Check battery condition
Check and clean all connections and cables. Replace anything that appears worn or nicked.

I would start by checking the solonoid, Try wiring direct with a starting trigger. If thats not it the starter may need rebuilding, fairly cheap at a motor shop.

its very possible the starter is wearing, but,as said already, check the connections ,see that thy are tite,no corrision around them, check the large wire from starter to solonoid ,make sure its not cut ,or worn,it could corrode inside the coating if cut, that will then make it a smaller wire ,not carring sufficent amperage, bit,my gut tells me the starter is worn,if your mechanical, you can pull it apart ,they do sell brush cups ,that is the bottom part of the staeter with the brushes, they are the parts that usually wear.you may need to search the internet for a source, bur it may be just as easy to buy a good used one on ebay.what motor is it

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

Be sure the cables area connected to the correct battery post. crossing cables, usually blows the rectifier, and can blow more.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Re: STARTER problems! please help

Just to give some background. At the beginning of the season I had to replace the Rectifier and stator. I also took the connectors off the battery and seated them after we were having this problem. I found a used one on Ebay for 35 so I might pick that up before its too late. I am pretty mechanical and my gut tells me its the solenoid. I will jump the power straight to the starter and see what that does today. Thanks for everyone's help so far! I'll let you know how it goes.

ok so I put hooked the starter right up to the battery and it does the same thing so I just went ahead and bought the used one, it should be here today or tomorrow so we'll see if that does it. thanks everyone!

There is not much to rebuilding a starter..I have 3 so far and its pretty basic....get a can of CRC electronic cleaner...split the starter...spray it down nice and clean...inspect the armuture for any burn marks...then get 2000 grit wet dry sand paper and clean the commutator and then wash that with the spray after you cleaned it....

Remove the old brushes..and replace with new ones...I made a tool to hold the brushes in place with a plastic putty knife....add a drop of grease to the lower bronze bearing ...reassemble....add a drop of oil to top bearing..and good to go....I think total time to do it was 45 minutes...

My first starter went on me..I got a used one on ebay..it worked good for a month and went on me..I opened it up and the brushes were shot..the insulation on positive brushes was chaffed...

I have a Johnson manual and showed how to rebuild them..so I rebuilt my old one and the ebay one..and one for a friend....they all work like a charm and no problems ....good as new now
