starter in 3208 cat, took the starter out to test it,hooked it up to a battery connecting neg to neg and pos to the small contact that was hooked up to electromag. switch, the starter only klicked, but if i made a bridge from the big pos.contact on the solenoid to the big neg.contact on the solenoid it would spin like it should, does this mean i have a bad solenoid-if so what could fry the solenoid because this would be the second in a short period of time

Re: starter problems

Most Starters are Grounded by it's Body,... Not Any of the Lugs.......

It Sounds like all you're doing is powering the Solenoid,.. That's Why it's Clicking.....

Attach the Ground Clamp to the Starter Body,.....
Attach the Positive clamp to the Big Battery Lug,....
Then just Jumper that same lug to the Smaller Exciter lug.......
Then the Starter Should Work.........

Btw,.......
The Biggest Killer of Solenoids is Low Voltage,..... Bad Batteries.....
It causes Internal Arcing,+ Burns the Contact Plate.........

Re: starter problems

If I remember correctly, the ground terminal is connected to the rear of the starter and the positive is on the big lug of the solenoid. Been awhile since I've done 3208's. So you should connect the ground to the lug on the very back of the starter, positive to big lug on solenoid then short across to the small wire on the solenoid. If I remember, is there a ground wired coming from another small terminal on the solenoid, to the ground lug on the rear of the starter?
