Just bought a 125/88 for parts.Owner said it hardly turns over and won't start.
I replaced the starter with a back-up.
I noticed the flywheel had a wobble(not supposed to).I removed it and saw the keyway was sheared.
Cleaned up the keyway and used a good flywheel. The other 's magnet was destroyed.
It turned over GREAT!!
Guess what???? It actually runs!!!
Now to the starter.
It was the original.NEVER cleaned never re-built NOTHING!!!
I pulled it apart.Saw the brushes were wore down and stuck.Springs were compressed a stuck.4Springs next to the right size2 after they were overheated
There was an obvious overheat situation as everything was cooked and carboned.
The armature where the brushes hit 2 of the windings were shorted out and destroyed the armature.
There was about a teaspoon of carbon/dirt in the bottom.See the pics.
So every year or 2 take the starter apart and clean it.JPicture 001.jpgPicture 002.jpgPicture 004.jpgPicture 006.jpgPicture 008.jpg

Re: Starter problems???

Well with 40 years working on these things there is no suggested maintanence or service intervals its just that outboards are being used 30 -40 years after production ( I have one 65years old) which is much longer than any car lasts ( other than Land Rovers ) It all a question of when you buy a non runner /cheap motor you have to go over all aspects if its to be reliable ..Axial brushes were never as good as the radial ones .....OK back to the water pump problem ...have it in the lathe at the moment re lining the housing ..pig to centre on the 4 jaw chuck !!!!

Re: Starter problems???

Would regular maintenance have prevented the damage, or was this caused by the sheared flywheel key and a corresponding prolonged attempt to start? In other words, did the last owner cause the starter meltdown after the keyway sheared by mercilessly attempting to start, or was the heat buildup from stuck brushes the main culprit?
After a backup starter, keyway and flywheel, does she run well again?
