Starter Problems?

I have a 1994 150 Mariner Mag III. The starter will engage immediately, but hesitates slightly before spinning the motor. Battery voltage is 12.6v. I've inspected the connections from the battery to the starter and all looks normal. I plan to jump directly from the battery to the starter, by passing all the wiring. If the problem still exists, how difficult is it to take the starter apart to inspect/replace brushes, etc.

OK. So I went straight from the battery to the starter with jumper cables and got the same result, bendix engaged and hesitated for half second before spinning the motor. Looks like the starter has got to come off.

Sounds like it. I just had to replace mine in a 2005. I bought an aftermarket one at DB Electrical for less than $100, then had the original rebuilt as a spare.

Did you check battery voltage while attempting to start? 12.6 volts doesn't mean anything if it can't produce any amperage.
