Starter question

I have a 97 Force 75hp. Lately often times when I turn the key to crank the motor over nothing will happen (it has a new battery). Other times it will crank over but then the starter only engages the flywheel for a second or two and then drops back down (correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it should stay engaged longer to turn the engine over?). Any ideas about what would cause this? Thanks

Re: Starter question

Do the stuff that dosn't cost anything first. Make sure all your electrical connections are clean and tight - don't forget the ground to the motor. If this dosn't cure it, try jumping past the solenoid directly to the starter to see if this spins the starter correctly. If it does, suspect the solenoid. If none of this works, it's time to take a hard look at the starter itself.

Re: Starter question

I have a 50HP Force. Had the same exact problem last week. Turned out that it needed a rebuild of the starter. If connections are good and tight and battery fully charged (BTW, are you using a deep cycle to crank motor? Deep cycles aren't designed to have cranking power) take the starter off and have an electrical automotive shop test it out. As long as the armature is good, rebuild it, cheaper too. You would be suprised how a little dirt in the unit can make a mountain out of a mole hill.

Good luck.
