had a click from back of boat when starting but starter did not engage...when I put a screw driver to the start cyl points A and B, it would start. I ran electrical wire from these 2 points up the side of the boat 2 a $2.00 door bell I bought at lowes. Now I turn the ignition key to on, and push the door bell button and it fires right up without opening the engine cover every time. Can this cause any prolonged damage?[/SIZE]

Re: starter question

Why not fix the problem instead?

Have you checked the slave solenoid? There are 2 solenoids for the starter, one attached directly to the starter and the other some where on the engine. It sounds like the engine mounted solenoid isn't working.

Re: starter question

...gotta agree with fishrdan!!!!

Your 'door bell' is simply doing what the slave solenoid is suppose to do!!
And besides....that funky little switch is not explosion proof nor weather proof!!! I'll bet the USCG would love to see that arrangement!!!

Re: starter question

Follow the yellow/red wire from the starter solenoid back to the slave solenoid. Hit the start and measure the voltage on the small yellow/red wire (in front), if 12V start on ignition switch is ok. Jumper from the red/purple wire on top to the small y/r wire on front. Slave should activate and starter should turn. If not try jumpering from r/p to large y/r (on top). If starter turns you have a bad slave solenoid. Good luck.
