starter question

My 71 Johnson 50hp has always had a problem with the starter cranking for a few seconds and then quitting.

It's an American Bosch SMH 12, serial number 01399

Today I pulled the starter apart and the brushes, springs etc were all shot and loose.

1.Can there be anything else besides brushes, etc that might be bad?

2.What rebuild kit should I get, so many of these seem to be generic fit all types?

Any help would be greatly appreciated in Colorado.

Thanks,
Jim

Re: starter question

Depending on how worn the armature looks like, you may want to turn the armature on a lathe machine.
You also need to make sure that the insulation between the copper segments on the armature are deeper than the copper itself. That bakelite is harder than the copper, and eventually the brushes will excessively spark. You need to gauge out that bakelite with a broken/sharpened metal saw blade.
You also need to dress the end of the new brushes to a matching cylindrical surface to the armature. Put a small piece of sand paper against the armature, put in a brush, and rotate by hand the armature back and forth. You want the brush to make contact on its whole end surface and not just at a line.
If there are no shorts in the windings, then this should do for a quick rebuild, assuming the mechanicals, bearings, etc, are right.

Archcycle,

I owe you at least 1 beer if you're ever in Colorado.

I really wasn't looking forward to doing a rebuild.

Many Thanks,
Jim
