'Marine' starter motors aren't 'sealed' as such. They are designed to not allow any internal sparks, like across the poles of the commutator, to initiate a fire or explosion. It's for this reason that automotive starter (and alternators, distributors and relays and solenoids, even fuses) can't be used in boats...
