Hi I have a '85 evinrude 175 V6 dont have the numbers with me. I need to use to batteries to start it. The batteries are new and test good with a draw. The cables to the motor from batts are as short as can be. If will start fine on 2 but with just one batt. The sprocket just engages then disenages. SDhould I rebuild starter or replace and can the avergae person do this??? Thanks guys this site has helped alot Stas

Re: starter rebuild or not?

Are these cranking batteries or deep cycle type?

I ask because I've seen that sometimes deep cycle batteries just don't carry enough voltage during cranking to make thigs work correctly.

What is the voltage at the starter during cranking with one battery?, two batteries?(easy enough to check)

Do you see much, if any voltage differential between the starter motor housing ground and the negative terminal of the battery?

and how many amps is the starter motor drawing. (could be more difficult to test without proper tool)

Maybe just a bit of spray lube on the starter gear drive might get it engaged enough to crank the motor.
