1998 Volvo penta 5.0GIPBYCCE. The boat has been sitting for 10 years. The starter just spins so I'm trying to remove the starter to have it rebuilt or replaced. I got one of the bolts out but I can't for the life of me get the other bolt out. Impact wrench wont work because the bolt is butted up against something not leaving any space for a socket. The only thing I can put on it is an open ended box wrench. I have hammered it to try to break it free. I have sprayed it although the bolt goes in from the bottom up so I don't think its is getting lubed.
I have noticed that the new bolts are now 1/2 inch instead of 9/16 allowing enough space to get a socket on there... Thats not doing me any good now though. Has anyone encountered this problem? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Short of pulling the motor, can you strike the bolt head with something hard to jar it loose then try a boxed in wrench, might get a little more torque on it that way.

Ayuh,.... With a thin-wall socket, 'n some combination of extensions, wobblies, 'n perseverance,.... it can be done,....

Or,... Remove the tin shield,.... 5 or 6 screws hold it in place, if ya can find 'em, 'n reach 'em,....

I've cut the offendin' finger of material off those shields before,....

I got the thin wall socket. It seems like with a little persuation with a hammer it'll go. I cant get both arms under to hold the socket and hammer it though. What is that shield for?

to keep anything in the bilge from making contact with the flywheel (like your fingers if your digging around the motor when its running.
