starter rope problems

I've been having a lot of problems with the starter rope on my '72 Evinrude 9 1/2. I have gone through 3 starter ropes because they keep fraying and breaking in half, and every time I have been right in the middle of a reservoir or river. I bought the motor 2 months ago, and the rope on there was so frayed that it put "fuzz" all over the inside of my motor. Every kind that I have bought has been a marine starting rope cut specially to the length that my motor needs. I really need some help because it's not too convenient to replace the starter rope every 2 weeks! Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks
Brent

Re: starter rope problems

is it possible that the rope guide is worn to a sharp edge?

I agree with schemo that the brass grommet that your starter rope runs through is worn out .Last I checked that grommet was unavailable but things may have changed. Then we get to installation. You will need to flang that grommet to fit the hole it needs to go through. There used to be a special tool for just this purpose but it is long obsolete.Would sure like to get my hands on one,and other grommets can be made to work.

Re: starter rope problems

Thanks for the info. Since these parts are no longer available, is there anything that I can do to keep the rope guide from shredding the rope so bad? I tried to look at the inside edge of the guide to see if it was sharp, but it's so far down there, and there is other stuff in the way that I couldn't get a good look at it. Does anyone have one of these rope guides that I could buy? Thanks

Brent
