Hi,

Hope to get some help again from you guys.

My mercruiser (5.0l carb from 2004) wont start sometimes. Sometimes only a small click sound, sometimes the harder one from the starter. I guess it would be smart to change the slave solenoid first?

Only my question is: I have a new spare one from a 3.0 mercruiser (carb engine) that is bought a few years ago. It looks exactly the same. Can i also use it for my 5.0l ?

Is it easy to get to? If you can take it off, bring it to your local auto parts store and they can bench test it for you for free. But before you do that, are all your connections corrosion free and clean? If not, clean them up and try again. If the starter solenoid looks the same, you can try use it to test it.

Ayuh,.... Odds are just cleannin' the connections on both solenoids will cure the problem, without new parts,...

The solenoid is easy to replace.

However the starter is very hard to reach so that is why i would like to try some other options first.

the thing that confuses me is that i get the soft click sometimes from the relais only, and sometimes the loud click from the starter. In both cases it wont start.

Make sure your battery is fully charged too. And clean up all the connections you can reach. While you have the battery disconnected do your best to reach the starter. Even if you can't undo and clean the terminals it can help to retorque (not over torque) the attachment nuts.

Replaced the solenoid with the one i had laying around for my 3.0 merc. Works great now! Connectors on the battery ware also quite corroded so i cleaned them also.

Thanks for the advice!
