Hello. I am in need of help from someone who knows the correct connections that go to this solenoid. I sorta inherited the job and sure would appreciate some guidance. I have numbered the posts in the attached picture for easy indentification.
From the starter button the wires connect to what?
What wires connect to the opposite side?

This is an 25HP Evinrude 1985 Model #E25TELCOS.

Thank you very much for any help..

#1 goes to the positive battery post and one of the starter button wires.
#2 goes to the other starter button wire.
#3 goes to ground through the neutral start switch.
#4 goes to the positive post on the starter.

ryoung, thanks for this information. At the risk of sounding completely stupid, how can I readily identify the "neutral start switch"? Hopefully, I will be able to figure the other ones out.

it is either in the control, or on the starboard side, just 2 wires.

Attention ryoung.

In answering my question about what connects to the solenoid, your response mentions there are (5) separate wires. In fact, there are (6) wires that connect to the solenoid.
Two from the starter button,
One from the positive battery,
Two wires with lugs for the smaller posts,
Then there is another one with a larger lug, that goes on a big post.

Does this make any sense to you? Please elaborate for me. Thanks

post 1 to battery. if you have a wire with a large lug that goes to the ignition switch (BAT) it would connect here too.
post 2 to ignition switch (start) probably 14 gauge
when you push the button to start, post 2 is connected to battery allowing power through to post 4 which goes to the starter (heavy red cable).
post 3 I'm foggy on. I could use clarification too, but likely the other wires go here.

I appreciate your response, but all this is very unclear. As mentioned, I have (6) wires to deal with. Four of them have the larger lugs on them, the remaining two have small lugs for the smaller posts.

Re: Starter Solenoid Connections - See Picture

I was looking at that same 5 wire diagram that ezeke posted for the starting circuit. At the back of my manual I've found another drawing that shows that 6th wire for the rectifier that he mentioned. You are going to have to do a little bit of tracing.
Post 1 has 3 wires on it, the large red battery positive cable and 2 smaller red wires. One of the smaller wires goes to the starter button and the other small red wire goes to a terminal strip and then to the rectifier.
Post 2 is a yellow and red wire going to the starter button.
Post 3 is a yellow and red wire going to the neutral start switch.
Post 4 is a large red wire going to the starter. The post numbers in your picture are not critical of course and you could swap numbers 1 and 4 if it is more convenient for wiring.
From the pictures in the manual, it looks like the neutral switch is under the hood right by the shift lever and you should see that terminal strip right there also.

Thank you so much for the clarity of your information. If I can't figure it out from here, I'll be embarrased and just take it to a motor shop somewhere. I do indeed see the terminal strip you mentioned. And, there are two wires that run from there to the other side of the motor where the solenoid is located.

Re: Starter Solenoid Connections - See Picture

Fellas, I want to admit a mistake that really is easy to make. I bought a new push button starter switch, a new starter solenoid, and installed them. The motor still would do nothing when I tried to start it. After working on this problem and spending almost $100.00, I finally realized the motor was in gear! The neutral switch kept it from starting all that time. In the future when some novice is having the starting problems that I had, maybe you guys should ask if the motor is in neutral first. I hated to admit this, but it may really help someone else down the line.

Again, many thanks for all of your inputs.

Well, you might as well look on the bright side. At least you know that you won't have to worry about having an accident because you started it in gear.:D
I'm glad you got it going and thanks for letting us know.
