Just bought my first boat with a motor and need some help.

Ran great until I brought it home but now won't start. I thought the solenoid was bad but now think it was just a grounding issue. The guy told me he replaced the solenoid recently but it looked nothing like the OEM. I bought an OEM solenoid and can't figure out how it grounds?

It will fire right up if I jump the two large wires. I have two small posts on the solenoid. One is from the key. Is the other for a ground? I assume it is but didn't want to kill it somehow.

page a18 for the diagram

close to the fat red +12 post (3 wires) looks like the adjacent small post needs to go to ground directly the other post is the control post from the key switch ...on the diagram if I read this correctly...

disconnect all wires rom the 2 small posts and measure resistance ...should be a few ohms if not the inner winding is open

make certain the key switch sends +12v in start mode if not... bad key or bad wire or bad +12v to the switch or... bad neutral switch you have a plug harness.... open it and inspect /clean all connections ...could be just corrosion

Thank you. I thought that post was for a ground but wasn't sure. The old solenoid was an auto version so it was grounding(not very well) through the mounting bolts. I ran a new ground wire to the solenoid and problem solved.
