ok i have a 1997 four winns with the 3.0 volvo penta. my starter solenoid went out so i take it to get fixed. it had a four post solenoid on it and they replaced it with a 3 post and said it would be fine for me to tape up the wire that went to the fourth post. is this true? starting from the top going clockwise.. is the hot to the battery then a yellow/red (small post) then the other that goes from solenoid to the starter and last the other small post that had a purple wire. whats the purple wire for and do i need the fourth post? Thanks for any info on this

Re: starter solenoid

Were "they" taking a shortcut?

I browsed the forums looking for a wiring schematic for your volvo, but other than this troubleshooting thread that Don previously posted - http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=167035, I didn't find much. Maybe look here as well - http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=288430.

Seems to me that a manufacturer wouldn't invest the time and money it takes to run wiring that you suddenly wouldn't need later on, so I'd be inclined to question leaving it taped up.

My two cents

Re: starter solenoid

When I called him he said that wire was just for the older boats that had points that it would be alright to just tape up the wire. Can't find anywhere that tells me what the purple wire goes to.

Re: starter solenoid

That terminal is there so the ignition system gets full voltage when starting.
The EST distributor does not work very well if it sees too big a voltage drop when cranking. With that 4th terminal, the power does not have to run all the way to the ign. switch and back.
They should put the right solenoid on.
