I am replacing the starter solenoid on my 98 Force 40. The original solenoid had no markings to designate the switch side or the ignition side wires. My replacement solenoid does. An I for ifnition and an S for switch. If you are facing the while the wiring is still comnectes to the solenoid and using the points of a compass, the red wire from the battery is on the southern pole, black to the starter on the northern pole, west has 2 black wires, and east has 1 yellow wire with a red stripe. Is the yellow wire the wire running from the key switch that will connect to the to the S pole?

Where did you get the replacement solenoid ?-----And be very careful when you start guessing on what wire might go where.-----Find a wiring diagram before you hook up anything.

I bought it from Bay Area Powersports. The replacement is spec'ed for my year and model engine. I'm hesitating putting it on until I am certain I'm hooking it up correctly

As the solenoids has two small terminals the housing of the solenoid do not have connection to the control coil. Solenoids with one small terminal has the control coil grounded internally to the housing.
Connect one of the small terminals to ground and the other to the starting wire (yellow/red). It does not matter which one that goes to ground.
The two lager terminals is for the power to the starter and it does not matter which one you connect to the starter and the battery.
