Hi,

on my 1993 Merc. 60 hp 3 cyl. (S/N 0D074327), it happen once that the starter motor stay engaged after the engine started. I was running it on the muffs with the cowling removed, so when i heard the strange noise and see where it come from, i turn the key to off. This shut the engine but the starter still run, so i lightly tap on it with the handle of a screwdriver and it stop.

So, i think this problem could came from two sources: a bad ignition swith or a faulty starter solenoid. Is there's a way to know wich one it is? I can't test them for continuity cause i haven't been able to replicate this condition.

Thanks for your input.

Steve

Re: Starter stay engaged...

Get both. A whole lot cheaper than replacing a fried starter motor.

The same thing happened to me the first time I started my motor last spring. Disconnected the battery cable to stop it then reconnected. Has worked flawlessly ever since, probably 100+ starts. Never did find the cause.
