:Di have a 1998 Volvo Penta 5.0 gl. I have had problems with the engine dieing and not wanting to start in the past and out of nowhere it will fire up and run great. Last timeout on the river it started up and died about 30 seconds later. Could not get it running, had to get towed in. Took it home and messed with it, got it started and when I throttled up a bit the starter engaged. Burned up the starter. Bought a new starter and ignition switch. Tried to start and the same thing happened. Thought it might be a relay. Changed both at the fuel pump and behind a cover, same thing. I don't want to burn up another starter. Used a test light at the new ignition switch everything is good there, but something is telling the starter to stay engaged. It's a 98 Glastron 205 gs

Re: Starter still engaged when running

It sounds like the diode that prevents this from happening has failed and is causing backfeed to the starter. Find your wiring diagram here.

Boatinfo - Volvo Penta BY series engines Electrical & Ignition Service Manual

Look at the two leads that power the fuel pump, one comes from the ignition (by the starter) to power the fuel pump while cranking and the other from the alternator to power the fuel pump while the engine is running. By our description it sound like the diode powering the fuel pump between it and the ignition has failed and is supplying power to the starter through the alternator.
