Hey guys, have a 2004 glastron w/ a 4.3L Mercruiser, starter went up, just got the new one through UPS. After installing it I noticed instead of having four total connections, I have three. One going to the Battery, one to the starter cylinder and one that was hot with ignition engagement that I hooked the other yellow wire too. It starts now but I know that purple wire goes to the fuel and oil pump and I have no where to hook it. Any options? can I connect it to the same terminal as the yellow wire? thanks

Re: Starter went up

You bought an automotive starter, not a marine starter. Or you bought the wrong marine starter. But I would bet you bought automotive to save some cash.
Automotive are not ignition protected, and could be an explosion hazard if you had gas fumes in the bilge due to a leak.

So this is a totally bad idea? I had read somewhere on a forum just to get an automotive starter because they were same. It appears that the correct marine starter goes for $90 on the internet, which is less than what I payed for through the parts store

Obviously the one that posted that didn't have a clue. That is the kind of posts that gets people dead.

Yeah get the marine starter. Now you have to buy a car with a bad starter so you can use that starter. They don't take returns on installed parts. LOL.
