i have a 2002 5.7 gi-c volvo penta motor. i seen the wiring topics and mine is somewhat simular except the color of the wires. i have red wire from battery, red wire from cylonoid, and yellow with red stripe. i also have 2 medium size wires that are in same harness that are both red as well. i just had heads redone, new gasket and fuel pump installed by someone. since that was done the motor runs great, with exception that none of my electronics work now. when i push the windsheild wiper switch or the motor blower switch the fuel pump comes on. thats without key turned on. so im thinking the wires to the starter are mixed up somehow. i dont have the orange and purple wires as the other diagrams show.

Your accessories like the WSWipers, blowers, pumps, etc. should even be hooked to the engine circuit.
They should all come off a separate fuse panel wired to the battery switch or battery not the starter.
here is the wiring diagram for your engine. As you can see, you should have 3 red wires going to the starter, not 4. That 4th one is probably your accessories, and should be hooked up to the battery or battery switch with a fuse.

ok, 2 large red wires, one comes from the battery switch, the other comes from some cylonoid looking thing behind a trim pump or something, the other 2 red wires one larger than the other are in same harness together both red, different sizes, cant trace them down.the 50 amp has connector plug with 2 prongs inside it, its not hooked up to anything. it comes from the bottom of the 50 amp breaker. there are a harness that comes into the top. il try and post pics.

the funny thing is, when you take the battery wire from the switch, and touch it to one of the 2 wires in my hand pic, the fuel pump comes on, push the blower motor button and they both come on when touched. thats with the key switch off.

Re: starter wiring help needed

You have a problem with the fuel pump relay, or the ecm that is telling the fuel pump to run. There is no wire going to the starter that specifically goes directly to the fuel pump. Look at the wiring diagram. Jst a note, the ecm only supplies a ground for the fuel pump relay when it's told to turn on. Which is for 2 second when the key is turned to run, and when the ecm sees a reference signal saying the ignition system is working.

i replacd the fuel pump relays, not the prob. i have a friend thats a mechanic for local boat shop. he thinks its the ecm as well. the shop he works at doesnt do diagnostics for volvo pentas. he says it looks like i have 1 circuit for my wiring, says there should be 2 seperate circuits. thinks the elctronics are tied into the engine harness. my electronics wont come on what so ever. the guy who replaced my fuel pump ran a hot wire from battery to old fuel pump wires to test it, could this have fried something. would a diagnostics from place that does them be able to tell? also i was told by someone else that the ecm either works or it doesnt, that it shouldnt even run if it was bad. is this true or not? the closest boat mechanics that does diagnostics on volvo pentas is few hours away, just trying to eliminate a couple trips if i can. but will do what i need to to get out fishing. has anyone ever had the ecm flashed or remanufactured so to say. i keep reading that the ecm either works or it doesnt. if it didnt work wouldnt my engine not start? the ecm and ecu are the same right???
