I have a 1988 Bayliner with a 3Liter 4 cylinder and an OMC cobra outdrive. The boat will start 20 times in a row and then nothing when I turn The Key. Some times if I jog the power tilt button and turn the key at the same time it will then start. Other times nothing and then I have to pull off the motor cover and jump across the solinoid to the starter. I suspect a limit switch somewhere either in the control handle or somewhere??? How can I bypass these limit switches.

I would welcome any sugestions
please Email me direct at pifsi@att.net

there should be two yellow/red wires that goes to your throttle, just cross them together.

May wanna look at the Coil contacts on your starter. When they start to go this is how they act.

Damboat.- - When you "cross" or jump the
yellow with red stripe wire. You have bypassed
the neutral safty switch. Now the engine will
start in gear, at any r.p.m. - foreword or
reverse. Think about what could happen ?

Very dangerous, you could - kill - someone.
Anyone standing in boat - your child behind boat ?
The Coast Guard - your insurance company - and
the injured persons lawyer, will love this
idea.
No such thing as " idiot proof " is there.

Re: Starter Wiring Problem

Thanks
Elpaso & McKenzie

I realalize the purpose of the neutral saftey switch but I imagine that in order to replace the limit switch I would have to install a whole new shift lever assembly. I may run a jumper wire with a momentary contact switch. Like I had mentioned before typically it starts fine just every now and then this happens usually after sitting in one spot fishing at night I will go to pull up anchor to move and nothing. Them I have to pull off the motor cover find a flashlight and use a screwdriver as a jumper to bridge between solinoid contact and the starter hot wire. And believe me I make sure its in neutral!!!!
