Guys I need help! I am working on a 1980 Glastron Cv-23 small block. Here's what's going on. When the key is turned on to spin up the starter to engage the fly wheel it just grinds. Batteries are new, starter is new, solenoid is new. I have cleaned the ground wire. When I removed the starter to check it I replace it and was able to jump across the pos to the switch and the old girl has life. Thought I had it fixed but once I tried the key again it just grinds. Any ides?

Bad teeth on flywheel or wrong starter. Make sure its a marine starter and its for correct flywheel size as there are 2 size flywheels....

I pulled the starter off again. Checked the teeth on the flywheel and they seem to be in good shape. I think you are correct about the wrong starter. I installed the starter an was able to get it to engage but was a bad grinding sound. Never was able to make it work with the key. Thanks for the advice.

I ran into that last year, the end play on the armature shaft had to much end play and was allowing the top part of the bendix to hit the fly wheel

Just thought I would get back on and say thanks. The guy I bought the boat from had installed a wrong starter. The right starter for the right motor makes all the difference. Two turns and it came to life. What a great feeling. I think the owner before me just got tired of messing with it. Still one of the best trades I ever made.
