I have a 1971 55 hp Chrylser. After it starts, the little gear that turns the crankshaft to start it would move up alittle while the engine is running and slightly hits the flywheel and causes sparks. It barely hits it, but it does. Do I need a new starter? Can that wheel be tighten down somehow or adjusted?

Re: Starter

There should be a spring that holds the Bendix gear down when the starter isn't running, Noah. That spring may be weak or broken.

It is also possible that your solenoid is sticking and allowing the starter motor to run after you release the key.
