Just got finished putting together my new longblock vortec 5.7GI-C. Can anyone help me determine if I can start this thing in the shop before I set it in the boat? I am sure there are just a couple wires on the main harness that need power. And remote starter switch... any help would be much appreciated!

Usually, you connect the battery to the engine as it would be in the boat. Then at the main wiring harness connector - connect a wire to the 'ignition' location and a wire to the 'starter' location.

Hook up the garden hose to the water intake.

Connect the 'ignition' wire to the battery + and then temporarily touch the 'starter' wire to the + of the battery to start the engine. To kill the engine disconnect the 'ignition' wire.

You can get a lot fancier with switched connections and gauges, etc. When I ran my Merc 454 on a stand, I connected an idiot light to the oil pressure switch, just to be sure it had oil pressure.

Speaking of oil pressure, you will want to make sure you prime the oil system before you start the engine.

Thank you for the quick reply! That sounds exactly right if I were to have a carbureted engine that does not need any electrical supply to the low and high pressure fuel pumps and also to the computer?Sounds like you have the same MPI engines in your boat so I am probably wrong just not wanting to screw anything up here (fry the computer). I do have an old 4.3 distributor that I have used in the past to prime engines I think that should fit this engine as well.

Thanks again much appreciated and Happy 4th!
