I'm new to boating and have just purchased an '88 16.5 foot Sportcraft bowrider, with an '88 (I think) Mariner 100 engine. Hoping to get some info on the following:

1 - I've read some of the posts, however I'm not sure if I've found the answer to correctly starting the engine after it has sat for some time. What I do is advance the fast idle about 1/2 way, turn and push in the ignition (it says push to choke). I hear a clicking sound much like a failing car battery on a cold morning, however the motor does not turnover. A second attempt results in more clicking and a slow turnover of the engine. A third attempt results in a fast turnover and engine start. Can someone advise the correct proceedure? Is there something that needs looking at? The serial # of the motor is 0B301044.

2- After startup the engine seems to run fine. At full throttle it smoothly revs around 5400 and pushes the boat to 43-44 mph. However at around 1600-1700 rpms the engine runs rough but smooths put again at lower rpms. Is this normal and acceptable operation?

3- The boat was stored over the winter with minor winter maintenance done, is there normal maintenance that should be done? How can I get info on the proper operation and maintenance of the motor? The only thing I notice is a slight stiffness or jerking of the steering which improved after greasing.

4- Any idea on where I can get info on Sportcraft boats? On the web all I can hind are offshore larger models. Is the brand no longer made? I would like info on care and maintenance as well.

Thanks in advance for your replies.
